holiday meals to the hung bring. good morning, alex. >> reporter: the thanksgiving operation in full swing, right now, here in glad. you can take a look and see all the volunteers, hundreds of them, 500 volunteers taking part in this effort. they do it every thanksgiving. over here, we have the hams are getting going, they will serve up 5000 meals to those in need later on today. just an amazing undertaking here. and all the folks come down and volunteer their time here on thanksgiving, and do their part to contribute. i want to disturb. you come down here many years, i understand? why? >> i do it for the people who need it, help them out, come down because it's a good, kind of a party for the volunteers, pretty much, there's a lot of people in need. and glad provides for the needs. that's why i come.

at a washington, d.c., area food bank. time is 7:05. the festivities, they have begun in san jose's fame miss turkey trot -- famous turkey trot. we are in san jose in the middle of everything and i'm looking over your shoulder, this is one of the biggest thanksgiving day races in the country. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, and the costume contest is about to get underway. you can see there's some great costumes. there's indiana jones, we have super mario brothers, a robot. and even pacman, and it's going to be a lot of fun, judging is about to start, but in the next 45 minutes, the first race will begin. now, this is video of last year's turkey trot. it's the second largest race of its kind on thanksgiving day.

race, it's been a stampede of the swarms of people coming through. it's a fun and festive atmosphere. people are smiling, it's a great way for them to spend thanksgiving day. 20,000 people are expected to participate in the 8th annual silicon valley turkey trot. police have blocked off streets near the race route, and are doing crowd control. while there are serious runners, many come out with the families to start the thanksgiving day for fun and burn calories. one of the activities that took place was the costume contest. >> we wanted to do the contest but we didn't know what, and i was watching casper the friendly ghost, and the father told her to go as a leftover, i said that's my costume. i'm a leftover. >> are you going to run? >> i'm going to run, but i'm going to take this off first.

water and what's going on. >> reporter: lot of people are disappointed. we're to have some nice weather over the who will at the same time we are south of the cliff house, and he. >> if you look over this wall right here, you can see these huge drifts that were created by the force of the water, a little more than 24 hours ago, and a lot of this area is roped off. we're here on the great highway, where yesterday morning, around 1:00, water burst through the manhole near balboa street, and it flooded the parking area, and spilled on the promenade, into the sand, in the ocean, and officials say it was about 90% rain water, 10% sewage, so the public utilities commission posted warning signs for residents and tourists.
